This culinary delight is British but my husband who is from New Zealand introduced it to me. When he first told me about it I thought, “am I going to be bubbling and squeaking if I eat this?” No, he said. It’s called bubble and squeak because those are the noises it makes when your cooking it.
This is a great way to use up leftovers of potato, squash, yam, cabbage, ham or chicken/turkey and vegies. The kids will love it!.
How to Make Bubble and Squeak
It’s easy, here are the instructions and what you can expect when you make this recipe:
1. Mix the potatoes, squash and yams together, If you want to add cabbage, cook and drain the cabbage and chop, set to one side
2. If the meat isn’t cooked already, cook it now and chop into bite-sized pieces. Add chopped onions and put everything in the bowl of squash and mix.
3. Add the cabbage or keep it as a side. We typically don’t put cabbage in ours, but traditionally you’d add it into the mix.
4. Make individual serving-sized pancake shape blops. Cook until browned on the bottom, flip, and brown the other side.
You can add butter and spices to taste.
